Topamax

Topamax is a prescription medication that was developed as a daily treatment for individuals who have been diagnosed with seizure disorders, most commonly epilepsy. This drug has also been shown (and verified by the Food and Drug Administration) to have some positive effects for those suffering from a chronic migraine condition. The reason that Topamax has garnered some attention as a weight loss aid is because when this product was tested it showed a decrease in weight by 16% of adult participants and 21% of child participants, which are significant findings even if the results weren’t what they were seeking to find.

Topamax, while having some weight loss potential, is not actually a weight loss drug. It was not engineered in order to assist in weight loss and includes many other components that are unnecessary for those without a seizure disorder or migraine issues. This drugs active ingredient is called topiramate and the inactive ingredients are extensive but not important as weight loss elements. If you decide to take this medication you should look all the ingredients over to ascertain whether or not they are apt to conflict with either your allergies or other medications.

In order to obtain Topamax you will be required to discuss it with your general physician and they will be able to help you determine if this is a good course of action. A doctor will have to prescribe Topamax to you as an “off-label” prescription, meaning that the purpose for which the physician is prescribing it to you is not what the drug is intended for. Some doctors are more willing to do this than others.

The truth is that you can find a product that is and over the counter weight loss supplement and it will not contain a bevy of chemical compounds that are unrelated to any of your weight loss goals. There are a good number of proven ingredients to be found in many of the dietary aids currently available. We suggest you give some of them a try before discussing the possibility of Topamax with your MD. We do not recommend Topamax for weight loss at this time.
