Estrin-D
Made just for menopausal and perimenopausal women, Estrin-D has been heavily marketed on TV. They claim to multiply the weight loss results for those women more than 16 times over. They use a clinical study published in the journal of human nutrition and dietetics as further proof that their product works. The ingredients include yerba mate, caffeine, guarana, damiana, green tea, ginger, kola nut, DHEA, schisandra, scutellaria, Tibetan ginseng, cocoa nut, and jujube.
The Good: This is one of the few products out there that actually completes the triad of damiana, guarana, and yerba mate. Most companies use just one, but unfortunately while they work together, they are useless for weight loss apart.
The Bad: So what's the catch you might ask. I asked the same thing, and here is what I dug up. First of all, the "clinical study" published in the journal of human nutrition and dietetics was not on Estrin-D. It was on the 3 part combination of damiana, guarana, and yerba mate. In this study, menopausal women on the placebo lost more weight than those on the 3 ingredients in question. Second, the makers of this product are already in trouble with the FTC for making false claims about their products. Third, it was only by doing a google search that I actually found the ingredients in Estrin-D. That might be because none of the ingredients included are gender or age specific.
The Skinny: There is nothing gender specific, nor age specific about Estrin-D. Their claim that it is the only diet pill for menopausal or perimenopausal women is nothing but a marketing ploy. It is your typical caffeine pill and nothing more, and I would not recommend bothering with this diet pill or the company it comes from.
